Consistency of professional players: how they are still around after so long?
There are a handful of reasons why professional players stay around for so long. One of the top reasons is that the professionals are better than the average players and novice players.
If you are better than the competition you will certainly be around for a longer period of time. Another reason is the monetary part of it. Most professionals will handle their money more carefully because of years of trial and error, resulting in them going broke.
Most of the top players in poker today, relating to the stability of their bankrolls are in their late 30's and up. A large portion of the 25 year olds and under crowd are still figuring things out, and seeing if they are able to last. The reason a large portion of young players fail is because of lack of self control.
When looking for consistency in a poker player you are looking for someone who can cash and win in tournaments throughout the course of a few years, and someone who can come out of high stakes cash games as a winner.
If you can slowly build your bankroll playing in cash games then you will have enough money to play in the big buy-in tournaments as well as the big buy-in cash games.
It will take years to build up a bankroll and most people don't have that kind of patience. The well known high stakes players most likely got their bankroll and their starts in big games from million dollar tournament scores.
There are a number of people every year who become poker millionaires, but there are very few who are able to maintain the lifestyle that accompanies it. When it comes to poker and gambling, most players will have an addictive personality and somewhat of a sickness.
It is the players who are able to control the sickness and swings of gambling that will be around the longest.
After a few years of poker, it will get boring to professionals so most will gamble on other things just to feel the initial rush they had when they were a 20 something year old kid looking to make a name.
Lastly, getting sponsored by a website or getting backed by someone will allow players to hang around for longer periods of time. If someone wins a tournament or has had a ton of success in the tournament or cash game field proving you have what it takes, this will only further a poker career.
Having a sponsorship deal with a company will add extra funds when you hit a break even stretch or a losing stretch, and it will allow you to not go broke.
If you are getting sponsored, the company doing the sponsoring wants to see you have success, so, the company will put up money for you to play in the big tournaments all over the world.
This is a great perk of being recognized and where most players can take a nice amount of money from. If you can run good in one or two big tournaments and win them, it will give you tons of bankroll stability, and allow you to be around poker for a long time.
